The Greatest Catch: Captain’s Edition
Captain Chico Alvarenga’s greatest catch is a story that needs to be told over and over again. It all started on the morning of January 3, 2015. He left the dock bright and early aboard the A-fin-ity with the Golden Group and mates Alex Alvarenga and Fernando Chacon, it was a day none of them will forget.
The seas were flat calm and plentiful. Shortly after leaving the dock, at about 19 miles out, they had their first bite. By noon they had already released 30 sailfish! Around 1:30pm they ran out of bait because of the nonstop action and Captain Dave Salazar came to the rescue with 4 dozen more ballyhoo.
As the day went by the seas became a tad bit choppy and the fish started biting even more. The action began again and was non-stop. By the end of the day they ended up with a whopping 123 raises, 103 bites, and 74 releases! Needless to say the Golden Group has already re-booked!
The Fishing World Lost a Good One
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our good friend Alejandro “Alex” Gonzalez. Alex passed away September 7, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. Alex’s angling and guiding career started in the late 80’s at Macabi Lodge, a small fishing lodge in the Archipelago of Los Roques off the coast of Venezuela. He quickly moved on to buying his own lodge which he named “Pez Raton”, spanish for bonefish. As an owner operator, Alex guided during the day and entertained in the evenings. Little did he know then that his efforts would greatly pay off creating one of the world’s most acclaimed bonefishing resorts. He hosted such legendary anglers like Mark Sosin, Lefty Kreh, and Flip Pallot. Alex’s true passion was fishing, from bonefish to billfish he loved it all! His career legacy will be marked by his longtime contributions to the protection and development of the Los Roques fishery. His charismatic personality and gregarious attitude was loved by his angling clients and friends.
Alex always made sure you had the “best” trip ever when you fished with Pez Raton. Since the late 90’s, he shared that same love of the fishery in Guatemala and kept returning for the thrill. Last season, he unknowingly left part of his legacy with our 35′ Contender the Pez Raton and we will continue to give angler’s the best trip ever. Alex also had an incredible love and devotion to his family. He was a loving husband to his wife Rebecca, and a role model to his daughter. Alex will be remembered as a respected angler, friend, and caring individual.
