Fishermen are often known for stories bigger than their catch, unless they have a picture to prove it! Let’s take a look inside
Captain Chris Sheeder’s greatest catch at Casa Vieja Lodge, and see if the fish measures up to the story!Chris’ best catch was aboard the
Release, our 37′ Merritt, on March 11, 2006. He and his crew released a record breaking 57 Sailfish on the fly that day! He had a three-day charter filming American Sportsman with Tony Gonzalez and their plan was to film for 3 days, but at the end of day 2 they had so much footage that they decided to have fun and only fly fish on day 3. Past lodge owner, Jim Turner, along with our Senior Fishing Consultant Herb Rosell jumped on the boat for that historic day 3, and that’s when the magic happened. Their plan was to break the existing record of 27 releases, and they accomplished it by 11:00am! After this, the music got louder, smiles bigger, and they released 30 more! “Guatemala was really showing off that day!” said Sheeder.
When asked about that day Chris grinned with his million dollar smile, “Talk about being at the right place at the right time. We started raising fish as soon as the second teaser hit the water and the action was non-stop. We ended up raising almost 200 Sailfish. I’m proud of that day, not only for the huge numbers that we posted but for the fact that we stayed true to our our conservation practices and took the time to safely remove the hooks on the sailfish.”
