Humpback Whale Released from Net
We’ve released a lot of turtles stuck in nets, but this past Monday, November 29th, Captain David Salazar, crew, and Florida based anglers RELEASED a HUMPBACK WHALE aboard The Hooker!
“I saw something at the surface and thought it perhaps was a submarine. Once we saw water shoot into the air, we knew it was a blowhole of a whale!” said Capt. David.
About 25 miles offshore, the whale was tangled in a gill net from local artisanal fishermen in a panga, who was still attached when The Hooker arrived. The crew cut the net to get the panga free and then worked on the whale.
“It was like she knew we were helping her, and I believe she was stuck in it all night so when we found her she was exhausted. After being set free, she looked at us and made a B-line for Costa Rica!”
With the work of mates, and anglers they safely managed to release this beautiful humpback whale in about 15 minutes. A first for everyone!
“I’m not going to lie, at one point I was nervous, when I saw her under the boat, her head on my left and her tale on the right, got it in gear quick!” chuckled, Capt. David.
