12,484 Billfish Released!!!
Thank you to all of our anglers who took part in releasing these billfish! There’s only one place in the world with these kinds of numbers, and there’s only one place that can deliver them on beautiful boats, excellent captains/mates, high caliber tackle, with an equally impressive on-shore experience at Casa Vieja Lodge!
In case you were wondering, we’ve been keeping our daily fishing stats for a handful of years. Below are the past 5 years’ total Billfish Releases. Keep in mind that totals vary by the skill of the angler and the total amount of fishing days in the year. We’ve been getting more popular thanks to you all so that equates to more fishing days! ‘Hooked On: Sailfish’ from Costa Sunglasses takes you on a journey from the Central American sailfish mecca to the competitive tournament arena off the Florida coast. You won’t want to miss this action-packed piece chock full of big eats, big air, and big fish. Watch it HERE.
This month, the Dolphin Fish Research Program fished with us and was able to deploy 9 popup Satellite tags amongst a handful of conventional tags. This Program is the largest fisherman-driven investigation of the life history, movements, and population dynamics of dolphinfish aka mahi mahi, or dorado. There is not much research available on wild dolphinfish which conveniently is served in most restaurants. Therefore, if this is a popular, wild, nutrient protein, and not much research on it, how long will this resource last?
A misconception of the Dolphin Fish Research Program is that they want to save all dolphin fish, and are against harvesting. FALSE. They want to learn about the resource and apply this knowledge to have it available for future generations. They want you to fish smarter. Tag and release the smaller dolphin fish, anything below 24″ should definitely stay in the water, and only harvest what you will eat. If you want to tag dolphin fish you can request tags HERE. If you want to fish with them on their annual expedition in January, send us an email HERE.
