Jake Jordan
The eleventh annual Jake Jordan Invitational Sailfish Fly Challenge is back this December 11-14, 2021, teams are comprised of one-two anglers catching billfish on FLY. Many new anglers don’t know about Jake Jordan, so here’s a quick profile of the legend.
Jordan is a world-famous Florida Keys tarpon guide and world-renowned big game fly angler. He was the founder and host of The Bonefish School, a saltwater fly-fishing school held several times a year in the Bahamas from 1972 through 2012.
Jake opened The Sailfish School a fly-fishing school designed to teach anglers how to catch Billfish on a fly rod. Jordan often brags that during the last 26 years of operation, his Sailfish School has never had a student in Guatemala who did not catch a Sailfish on a fly! Jake and three of his students released 30 or more sailfish on fly several times, in one day, and as many as 76 in one three-day session of The Sailfish School. During his lifetime, Jordan has caught more than 2,400 Billfish on fly, including over 2100 sailfish and more than 300 marlin on fly.

Lodge Availability
We have two boats left for New Year’s Eve if you wish to ring in 2022 catching billfish all day, having the staff make you ice cold drinks, or hang at the pool while the rest of your group catches dinner, then give us a call!
Also, once again a friendly reminder to secure your dates PLEASE. Especially for large groups of 12+ anglers, we don’t have availability until late April 2022 and many are already securing their 2023 dates so they get their exact dates. If you are date-specific, give us a call please we can help!
We are happy to see many familiar faces returning back to the lodge, and love meeting new clients that have been patiently waiting for this billfishing trip. Please remember to only tell your best friends about Casa Vieja Lodge!
Please also check the expiration date on your passports. There has been a big delay in renewing passports and we don’t want you to miss your vacation! Word on the street is passport renewals are taking up to 4 months!
Fishing Report
In July, the fishing was good, and the variety even better. One group took a much needed vacation and fished for 12 days! During their stay, they got their hands on sailfish, blue marlin, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, snapper, and grouper.
In Quepos, Costa Rica we hosted four FAD trips aboard The Hooker and some day charters. We also post our daily fishing report for Quepos HERE.

Guatemala:
- July 1st-22th, the Afinity (39′ Billy Knowles)with Capt. Nico Melendrez fishing 9 days, had 190 raises, 167 bites, 127 sailfish releases plus 6 marlin raises, 2 marlin bites, 2 marlin releases, 22 tuna, 2 roosterfish, 2 mackerels, and 9 mahi-mahi.
- July 1st-31st, the Rum Line (40′ Gamefisherman) fishing 9 days, had 96 raises, 91 bites, 60 sailfish releases plus 6 marlin raises, 4 marlin bites, 4 marlin releases, 14 tuna, and 10 mahi-mahi.
- July 2nd-30th, the Release (37′ Merritt) with Capt. Eddie Bairez fishing 13 days, had 201 raises, 166 bites, 112 sailfish releases, plus 13 marlin raises, 6 marlin bites, 4 marlin releases, 21 tuna, and 13 mahi-mahi.
- July 9th-12th, the Finest Kind (40′ Whiticar)with Capt. Nicho Alvarenga fishing 3 days, had 63 raises, 62 bites, 49 sailfish releases plus 4 marlin raises, 2 marlin bites, 32 tuna, and 4 mahi-mahi.
- July 23rd & 24th, the Pez Raton (35′ Contender), with Capt. Benji Baires, had 17 raises, 15 bites, and 7 sailfish releases plus 3 roosterfish and 15 grouper.
- July 25th & 30th, the Spindrift (38′ Stolper) with Capt. Franz Hoffman, had 4 raises, 4 bites, and 2 sailfish releases plus 2 tuna, mahi-mahi, 5 red snapper and 3 grouper.
Costa Rica:
- July 10th-27nd, The Hooker (48′ G & S),fishing a total of 9 days, had 4 raises, 4 bites, 3 sailfish releases plus 70 marlin raises, 66 marlin bites, 41 marlin releases, and mahi-mahi.
